Abstract: By the use of inelastic, magnetic neutron scattering the positions of the crystal field transitions in the alloys SE$_{x}Y_{1-x}Pd_{3}$ and SE$_{x}Y_{1-x}Al_{2}$ (SE = Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; x 0.05) were determined by substracting the spectra of these alloys from the reference spectra of YPd$_{3}$ and YAl$_{2}$. The measurements were performed on the time-of-flight spectrometers SV5 (KFA Jülich) and D7, IN4, IN5 (ILL Grenoble). For all the alloys the x and W parameters could clearly be determined in the crystal field scheme of Lea, Leask & Wolf. The crystal field parameters calculated from x and W show a certain systematic behaviour as a function of atomic number, which however is inconsistent with the predictions of the point charge model. An examination of the crystal field linewidth corroberates the fact, that the magnetic interactions are almost completely suppressed in the SE$_{x}Y_{1-x}Pd_{3}$ alloys.
